How to use the stands

IMPORTANT: READ THIS SECTION BEFORE USING STANDS The stands are easy to use, however there are some commonsense safety rules to observe when driving on or off:

  • Use stands on level ground only.
  • Place stands at least 1.5 metres back from poles, fences or other obstructions as the front of the vehicle will overhang the stands.
  • Do not drive on or off the stands without the aid of a controller.
  • Driver should approach stands in a direct line. Do not approach stands on an angle.
  • Driver should turn off radio and open window so that verbal instructions from the controller can be heard easily.
  • In order to be easily seen by the driver, the controller should stand on the driver’s side of the stands, 3 metres back from the front of the stand.
  • The main function of the controller is to give clear directions to the driver and to ensure that all 4 wheels are centralised on the stand tracks.
  • When driving up the stands, if you find at any point that the vehicle’s tyres are too close to the edges of the stand, the controller should guide the driver to reverse off and adjust the gap between stands before starting again.

DRIVING FORWARD ONTO STANDS

stop the vehicle at this point 1 – Place the stands in the desired position then drive forward to a point where the front tyre on the drivers side of the vehicle is just touching the centre of the first rung on the extension of the stand. Stop the vehicle at this point. NB When using the model with a slider extension, ensure that the slider is pulled out to the full extent of the safety chain.
tyre touching the first rung 2 – Align the passenger side stand so that the tyre on the vehicle is just touching the centre of the first rung on the extension of the stand.
adjust the distance 3 – Adjust the width between the stands at the front to ensure that the gap between the stands at the front equals the gap between the stands at the drive on end. A tape measure, stick or piece of string can be used to measure this distance.
directing the driver 4 – The person guiding the driver (controller) should stand 3 metres back from the front of the stands. The controller then uses a combination of hand signals and verbal instructions to direct the driver who should drive slowly up the stands, stopping or adjusting steering as directed by the controller. When approaching the point of balance, ie the point where the stand will tip forward, the driver should inch slowly forward until the front comes down and the vehicle levels off.
directing driver 5 – Continue to inch slowly forward until the front tyres are touching the stopper at the front end of the stand.
Folding down flap extension 6 – Fold down the flap extension, or for slider stands, slide the extension out of sight along the track under the mainframe.

REVERSING OFF THE STANDS

raise the flap extensions 1 – Raise the flap extensions and lock them in position, or with slider stands, pull out the slider to the full extent which the safety chain will allow.
reverse slowly 2 – Reverse slowly, following the instructions of the controller, who will direct the driver to ensure that all wheels remain in the centre of the tracks, stopping progress as the stand tips back. Continue to reverse, ensuring that the vehicle remains in a direct line with the stands until all 4 wheels are clear of the stands.

stop when wheel is touching first rung 1 – Place stands in desired position then back up to a point where the rear wheel on the drivers side is just touching the centre of the first rung on the fold down extension or with the slider model, to the centre of the first rung on the slider which should be extended to the full extent of the safety chain. Stop the vehicle at this point.
align the passenger side stand 2 – Align the passenger side stand so that the tyre on the vehicle is just touching the centre of the  extension on the stand.
adjust the width between the stands
adjust the width between the stands 2
3 – Adjust the width between the stands at the front to ensure that the gap between the stands at the front equals the gap between the stands at the drive on end.
direct the driver 4 – The person guiding the driver (controller) should stand 3 metres back from the front of the stands. (Not the extension/back end) The controller then directs the driver who will reverse slowly back up the stands, stopping or adjusting steering as directed.
As the weight dispensation in the majority of vehicles is towards the front of the vehicle, generally the stands will not tip back and level out until the car is backed high onto the stands. It is not recommended that vehicles be tipped back and left in the level position. If the stands do tip back and level out, the vehicle should be inched forward slowly until it tips forward again. Before driving forward, ensure that the fold down extensions are locked in position.
direct the driver 5 – The driver should apply the handbrake and engage reverse gear before leaving the vehicle.

drive slowly forward off the stands 1 – Drive slowly forward off the stands following the directions of the controller who will direct the driver to ensure that the wheels on the vehicle stay in line with the centre of the stands until all four wheels are clear of the stands.

USING THE TROLLEY

A trolley is provided to move the stands.

Safety Note:- To avoid injury, ensure hands are well clear of the slot on the trolley

trolley1 1 – When a stand is to be shifted, one person should lift the stand 15cm (approx) off the ground by gripping the two legs at the front end while a second person pushes the trolley under the pivot point located at the centre of the stand. Lower the pivot point into the slot on the trolley.
trolley2 2 – The lifter should then lower the pivot point into the slot on the trolley.
3 – The stand can then be wheeled to its new position where the lifter raises the stand out of the slot in the trolley and a second person removes the trolley.
It is not necessary to bend forward when lifting the stands but as with any lift, the lifter should flex knees, tighten abdominal muscles, and keep close to the stand.
